Has anyone started work on a light client yet? I imagine having UTXO's in block headers makes stuff a lot simpler.

That makes a lot of sense. I recall old versions of Bitcoin using a public IRC channel to connect to a bunch of them in the beginning, which isn't perfect but it beats hardcoded "trusted" nodes imo.
