@Clueless thank you for the welcome, sir
Mr.Krabs
2018-10-25 03:50:01
what is the crabby patty recipe!
Fireduck
2018-10-25 03:52:18
@Fireduck as we all know
it's very secret
but don't worry, it doesn't contain duck meat:grinning:
Mr.Krabs
2018-10-25 03:52:45
just making sure we are on the same page
Fireduck
2018-10-25 03:54:57
same page ?
Do you live in Bikini Bottom, sir ?
Mr.Krabs
2018-10-25 03:55:26
No, it would dampen my :fire:
Fireduck
2018-10-25 03:57:48
ah right:grin:
Mr.Krabs
2018-10-25 04:01:06
I would be happy if one day I announce to people that the Krusty Krab accepts SNOW as a means of payment
Mr.Krabs
2018-10-25 04:05:42
good
Fireduck
2018-10-25 04:08:03
@Fireduck hey sir
Bitcoin has a wide network because at first many people distributed it for free, as Gavin Andresen had done.
will you do it too?
Mr.Krabs
2018-10-25 04:12:59
@Mr.Krabs we don't have any premine
Clueless
2018-10-25 04:16:55
by which he means we don't have a huge amount to give out
Fireduck
2018-10-25 04:17:01
@fydel It looks like hamster pool is having some issues? I kept getting 'block is too old errors' and switched to satoshis guru and now everything seems to be okay.
aikida3k
2018-10-25 04:17:08
I know that, sir
but that doesn't mean we can't set aside a little for us to share with people to get to know our network
Mr.Krabs
2018-10-25 04:19:10
@Fireduck we don't have to share in a huge amount sir
Mr.Krabs
2018-10-25 04:19:12
the culture here is more like you have to learn in order to get SNOW. So you have to learn how to mine on NVMe or learn to mine with RAM or learn to mine with a PI
aikida3k
2018-10-25 04:19:31
Or buy some
Clueless
2018-10-25 04:19:43
g
aikida3k
2018-10-25 04:19:50
We have plenty of testnet to test with though.
Clueless
2018-10-25 04:20:26
yes. or buy some :slightly_smiling_face: But if you learn enough, you learn that you can buy it for a reasonable price in lieu of mining
aikida3k
2018-10-25 04:20:43
@Fireduck I want to mine it
Do you have any suggestions about hardware that I have to buy?
Mr.Krabs
2018-10-25 04:21:50
most cost effective is to drop about $5k and setup a ram mining fleet using the arktika miner
Fireduck
2018-10-25 04:22:22
but you can do ok putting an nvme in any reasonable computer
Fireduck
2018-10-25 04:26:24
at a cost of $ 5k, how much hashrate will we get?
Mr.Krabs
2018-10-25 04:27:42
I haven't actually built the thing I've speced out, so not sure. Probably about 3mh/s
Fireduck
2018-10-25 04:30:04
@Mr.Krabs you can probably get 1mh/s per $1000ish
Clueless
2018-10-25 04:34:06
can mining SNOW start from $ 1000 ?
Mr.Krabs
2018-10-25 04:35:05
not for the most cost effective, unfortunately. The most effective right now is mining using ram, so you need to get at least 128gb + OS of ram
Fireduck
2018-10-25 04:35:15
it can be across multiple computers but still ram isn't cheap
Fireduck
2018-10-25 04:35:30
you can do nvme/ssd mining for a lot cheaper
Fireduck
2018-10-25 04:53:58
I have an old computer with Core i3 3110M @ 2.4GHz
I just have to replace the HHD to SSD
with that, how much hashrate will I get?
Mr.Krabs
2018-10-25 04:54:50
depends on the spec of the ssd, but probably 20kh/s
Fireduck
2018-10-25 04:55:07
if you pick one, we can do the math and give a closer estimate
Fireduck
2018-10-25 04:55:21
you want as high as possibly random read operations per second
Fireduck
2018-10-25 05:01:46
what if we use a 256GB Samsung 860 EVO SSD ?
Mr.Krabs
2018-10-25 05:02:36
let me check
Fireduck

Random (QD32): Up to 98,000 IOPS
Fireduck
2018-10-25 05:05:44
98/6 = 16
Fireduck
2018-10-25 05:05:48
so 16kh/s
Fireduck
2018-10-25 05:05:58
not sure what qd32 means
Fireduck
2018-10-25 05:06:03
queue depth?
Fireduck
2018-10-25 05:07:50
ok
Mr.Krabs
2018-10-25 05:07:53
if we still have enough space to install snowfields, can we mine with some snowfield using 1 processor?
Mr.Krabs
2018-10-25 05:07:59
@aikida3k all back to normal now. the pool missed an update. thanks for the heads up.
fydel
2018-10-25 05:08:56
@Mr.Krabs you can use as many or as few processors as you like
Fireduck
2018-10-25 05:09:12
as long as you can store at least the current field (128gb)
Fireduck
2018-10-25 05:10:49
@finex check and make sure you run the latest version. there was a little bug that can break your pool.
fydel
2018-10-25 05:13:26
@Fireduck I mean this, if we have 1 TB of SSD. can we mine using 5 snowfield (in 1 SSD) using 1 processor ?
Mr.Krabs
2018-10-25 05:25:37
you mean have 5 copies of the snowfield?
Fireduck
2018-10-25 05:25:56
that won't help you get any better speed, the limiting factor is number of IOs you can get out of the SSD per second
Fireduck
2018-10-25 05:27:16
yes
Mr.Krabs
2018-10-25 05:28:52
ok, I started to understand
Mr.Krabs
2018-10-25 05:42:34
hash rate is going up
Fireduck
2018-10-25 05:46:43
Using just one copy of the snowfield will give you better hashrate as the ram you have can be used for caching
mjay
2018-10-25 05:47:33
a few percent, depending on how much you have
mjay
2018-10-25 06:30:37
@Mr.Krabs we're here to help you get started and we can help you test things. :)
Clueless
2018-10-25 08:58:00
@Clueless Thank you very much, sir
Mr.Krabs
2018-10-25 09:58:38
why some modern SSDs are good for snowblossom and why some are bad, is a very difficult concept to explain to the uninitiated
Rotonen
2018-10-25 09:59:14
the read iops shorthand is a good catch by @Fireduck in regards to 'just look at this number'
Rotonen
2018-10-25 14:02:53
hashrate up a lot last day or so. I love the idea of getting a big RAM rig with 512gb but I'm worried if the hash rate goes up too fast nd im stuck with this setup with no secondary market to resell
offmenu
2018-10-25 14:04:02
I think maybe just renting space to mine until the reward reduction might be a better play than buying the hardware
offmenu
2018-10-25 15:27:56
@offmenu you can always add more nodes and have them use each other's ram to mine with the arktika miner
Fireduck
2018-10-25 15:28:01
it works surprisingly well
Fireduck
2018-10-25 15:28:13
i have to read about the arktika miner
offmenu
2018-10-25 15:28:19
but anything beyond 128gb is not cheap
Fireduck
2018-10-25 15:28:38
though I have an old dell server with ddr2 that wasn't too bad
Fireduck
2018-10-25 15:28:44
but the monster uses 700w
Fireduck
2018-10-25 15:31:24
wow

i have an idea to get a cheap dell mobo with 8xdimm slots and buy 4x64gb ram, and then use a 16gb in the 5th slot for OS. then mine until 512gb activates and then upgrade with an addition couple 128gb sticks. The thing is those 128gb are expensive but they could potentially go down in $$$ by the time those fields activate, unless snow becomes very popular and they activate very quickly
offmenu
2018-10-25 15:35:28
wow so that server comes with 256gb for 900?
offmenu
2018-10-25 15:35:44
I am not very knowledgable on modern server hardware but can't seem to spec anything beyond 128gb without it being extremely expensive
Fireduck
2018-10-25 15:35:57
yeah those 128gb sticks are like 3k almost haha
offmenu
2018-10-25 15:35:58
yeah, that one is even ddr3, so super fancy

2018-10-25 15:36:57
my plan was to build a solid 128gb node and just add nodes as needed
Fireduck
2018-10-25 15:37:08
starting with three nodes to do 256gb field size with some os head room
Fireduck
2018-10-25 15:37:19
might need to upgrade to 10gb networking
Fireduck
2018-10-25 15:37:30
even that old r900 maxes out my gig network
Fireduck
2018-10-25 15:44:21
I haven't actually built one of those yet so not sure how it will do

offmenu
2018-10-25 15:46:00
looks complicated
offmenu
2018-10-25 15:46:10
it is complicated
Fireduck
2018-10-25 15:46:23
hard to avoid without building in a bunch of autodiscovery
Fireduck
2018-10-25 15:46:33
which would probably just make it way more complicated
Fireduck
2018-10-25 15:46:54
certainly room for improvement especially around logging and reporting
Fireduck
2018-10-25 17:28:00
There is a new version (1.4.1) that fixes an issue where nodes go into a state where they are not doing anything useful. I'd suggest updating all nodes to 1.4.1 soonish.
Fireduck
2018-10-25 17:28:24
No protocol or consensus problem, just nodes effectively going offline until restart
