seems i will continue to be confused about what is usb, what is pci-e over cable, what is thunderbolt and what is displayport https://www.anandtech.com/print/14590/vesa-announces-displayport-20-standard-bandwidth-for-8k-monitors-beyond VESA Announces DisplayPort 2.0 Standard: Bandwidth For 8K Monitors & Beyond
i can see the discussions of 'yes, plug the disk into your GPU display out for mining, yes, forreals'
also as that's now essentially usb, does it or does it now do power delivery too
Yeah, my mac book pro at work has a USB-C that charges the laptop, runs a giant display and other thigns
it is basically insane
laptops are all sorts of mad anyway
the processors ramp up from 2A power draw to 80A power draw in an actual jiffy
and the power delivery keeps up
pretty much madness
the only other category of device i've seen do that is an ohm sausage
Is that what you call plain barrel resisters?
no, it's an electrical engineering student trick
you run household wall socket AC through a sausage
electrical engineering tricks are usually great and terrifying
the system is self limiting, the current and resistance spike up as the sausage cooks pretty quick before becoming an insulator before the circuit protection trips up
quite safe
and of course one measures the power curve for fun
so when the current drops, it is done?
yes
it also has an analog built in display for the doneness
as in it's pretty obvious it is now hot, crispy, juicy and rather edible
right
great fun for the freshmen to marvel at
there are a couple of tricks to it in regards to shaping the plasma channelling (as in sparkthrough prevention), but if one thinks it through a few times and remembers murphy, one is fine
so maybe do not run off to try it en masse :stuck_out_tongue:
here's a more exterme demo from an old colleague of mine https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6htxWO9GNI YouTube Video: ohminakin paisto motilla (ohm sausage)
featuring the above mentioned plasma channeling
(gone wrong)

it even has a finnish wikipedia entry, maybe google translate will manage :stuck_out_tongue: https://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ohmimakkara Ohmimakkara (myös sähkömiehenmakkara) on temppu, jossa makkaraa kuumennetaan johtamalla 230 V sähkövirtaa pistorasiasta sen läpi. Menetelmä voi olla hengenvaarallinen.
ah, 230V, I was wondering
should work just as well with ~100V
people do that off car batteries as well
voltage goes distance, amperage heats
@fydel you got time this coming weekend to look at how to have munin not devnull the history beyond one year?
