there is a fire where my families lives. state of emergency has been declared today. maybe they need to be evacuated.
there is a military test site near by and there have been rockettests but the moorland is on fire now.
what a shitshow. sometimes i think our army is for drunk idiots only.
that is probably everyone's army
the air was like that here a bit ago
no risk of fire where I am, but it was not fun to breath
i certainly was both during service
peat fires are nasty, hard to put out
the irony is complete when they put it out by exploding
we are not used to stuff like that.
https://www.dw.com/en/germany-moorland-fire-sparks-disaster-situation-as-blaze-spreads/a-45590381 Authorities have told residents near the northern German town of Meppen to prepare to evacuate amid a raging moorland fire. The fire was started by Germany's military testing rockets in area.
i declined military draft and instead did civil service with handicaped people in - suprise - meppen. lol.
oh yeah, germany does the draft still. In the US all us males are supposed to register but hope that nothing will go badly enough to need to be called.
I think I am aged out now anyways.
the draft was abolished a couple of years ago here.
but in 1995 i had to write up an essay why i don't want to do military, had to go to a hearing and explain the same thing and then do civil-service which lasted 1/3 longer than military.
talking about it now feels like talking about crazy times. lol.
sounds like you are about four years older than I am

XRP = bullshit? discuss.
Is ripple actually decentralized?
that is my concern with it
only some nodes are in the special node lists that validates the network state
If its centralized its a big no-go. No advantage to regular fiat money
agreed
and ex-minister baron, karl-theodor zu guttenberg from germany was part of ripple.
i wish i was joking.
I heard he has cheese breath
fun fact: he was the minister of defense that abolished the draft but was kicked out of office because his dissertation was only copy&paste.
So ripple has this UNL (Unique Node List) that control the consensus
I don't understand how nodes get into the UNL
My initial suspicion was that it was the banking investors got nodes but I could be wrong
https://ripple.com/technical-faq-xrp-ledger/ Technical FAQ for Validators and Unique Node Lists, the role of XRP and security concerns.
ah, each node operator is encourged to select their own UNL set
that isn't a terrible idea
power clique management will keep the peasants entertained and busy?
ha, maybe. Seems a bit hands on for most node operators
but seems like something that could be delegated
like this guy Fred has his head on straight and keeps track, so I'll just clone his UNL configuration repo and update via cron job
to clarify: i'm (probably) not actually as cynic as i tend to leave an impression of
but, similarly, re: cronjobbable trustables: http://someonewhocares.org/hosts/hosts
ha
I think democracy should be replaced with a flexible representation model.
Let's say I can't be bothered to follow Seattle local politics, but I know my friend Gus does so I delegate my local vote to him.
If I ever lose faith in him, I can change it
If you get enough people delegating to you for any level of government you get an office and the ability to propose bills
and participate in various forums
what you actually want is an STV voting system
The biggest problem is that is still has a hard time doing difficult and unpopular things
but necessary things
yeah, STV sounds like it
the biggest issue with STV is explaining the results
if you cannot explain that to the vast majority of voters, that's a problem
easy, pick your smartest friend who you agree with, and delegate your votes to him. Go back to drinking.
If something happens you don't like, ask him why
heh, was helping a friend sweep an old bitcoin brainwallet to something sane, and accidentally typoed the seed - got someone else's brainwallet instead - sorry to whomever i accidentally swiped the 300 satoshi from...
brainwallets are evil
Yeah
There are still brainwallets? I thought the website has gone offline years ago
@mjay the problem is that people made brainwallets many years ago
so the coins are now locked?
I see, its just hashing the seed for the private key
Wouldn't be too bad with some pkkdf stretching
or seeds with enough real entropy

seed "12345"
thats insane. It had BTC on it!
Heh, I put some on "password" years ago to see how fast it would go
so, what happened?
gone within seconds I guess
Yep
`1HZwkjkeaoZfTSaJxDw6aKkxp45agDiEzN` is my favourite so far of the recently exposed seeds, `(empty)`
