@THX 1138 4EB re: cyberpunk-ish dystopian living in a ~container http://uk.businessinsider.com/kowloon-walled-city-photos-2015-2 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kowloon_Walled_City 33,000 people lived and worked in Kowloon Walled City in Hong Kong. It was the area of an average city block, making it 119 times as dense as New York. Kowloon Walled City was a largely ungoverned, densely populated settlement in Kowloon City in Hong Kong. Originally a Chinese military fort, the Walled City became an enclave after the New Territories were leased to Britain by China in 1898. Its population increased dramatically following the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong during World War II. By 1990, the Walled City contained 50,000 residents within its 2.6-hectare (6.4-acre) borders. From the 1950s to the 1970s, it was controlled by local triads and had high rates of prostitution, gambling and drug abuse. In January 1987, the Hong Kong government announced plans to demolish the Walled City. After an arduous eviction process, demolition began in March 1993 and was completed in April 1994. Kowloon Walled City Park opened in December 1995 and occupies the area of the former Walled City. Some historical artefacts from the Walled City, including its yamen building and remnants of its South Gate, have been preserved there.
if that seem very cyberpunk or anime, quite many authors have been inspired by it over the years
that's super weird
yeah, i kinda love that place based on the photos. not sure i would have loved living there tbh but i do love the photos
there's an arcade in japan that is styled on this theme
there are documentaries and more photo sets, just FYI
i'll look them up
shame they knocked it down. i'd have loved to see it at some point. not sure whether it would actually be a viable tourist attraction though, plus they might not be proud of it
also the locals might not have taken it too kindly if you go there and treat their home as a zoo of sorts (and they already did illegal organ trade to begin with, so...)
